When the Storms Begin to Rise

Life has a way of changing without warning.

One moment, the waters seem calm. The next, unexpected challenges, difficult conversations, health concerns, financial pressures, or uncertainty begin crashing over us like waves in a storm. It's easy to feel overwhelmed when life seems out of our control.

The disciples knew that feeling all too well.

In the Gospel of Mark, we read about a violent storm that swept across the Sea of Galilee while Jesus and His disciples were in a boat together. As the waves grew stronger, fear took over. They were experienced fishermen, yet even they believed the storm might overwhelm them. Meanwhile, Jesus was asleep.

Desperate, they woke Him with a question many of us have quietly asked ourselves during difficult seasons:

"Don't You care?"

Jesus did care.

He cared enough to calm the wind and the waves with only His words. More importantly, He cared enough to calm the hearts of those who trusted Him.

The storms didn't surprise Him then, and the storms in our lives don't surprise Him now.

There are days when circumstances feel bigger than we are. Anxiety rises. Fear whispers that we're alone. We wonder how we'll make it through. Yet Christ continues to remind us that His presence is greater than whatever threatens to shake us.

One image that has always spoken to me is that of a lighthouse.

A lighthouse doesn't stop the storm. It doesn't remove the waves or calm the wind. Instead, it stands firm, offering light, direction, and hope to those navigating dangerous waters.

That's who Jesus is for us.

He is our steady guide when life feels uncertain. He is our safe harbor when everything around us seems unstable. His light continues to shine, even when we can barely see through the rain.

Whatever storm you may be facing today, remember that you do not face it alone. Christ walks beside you, watches over you, and holds you securely in His care.

May you find peace in His presence, courage in His promises, and confidence in knowing that the One who commands the wind and the waves is also watching over you.
