175th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (2009)

The 175th Anniversary Celebration of Salem Methodist Church on October 4, 2009, was the culmination of nearly a year of planning, research, restoration, and fellowship. Beginning in January, church members worked tirelessly to gather photographs, family histories, and historical records that resulted in the publication of Seasons of Salem, a comprehensive history of both Salem Church and Salem Cemetery. Dozens of volunteers contributed their talents as researchers, writers, editors, proofreaders, photographers, and designers. At the same time, church leaders oversaw significant renovations to the church facilities, while members prepared special music, historical presentations, period costumes, and even a miniature Salem Chapel float for the Zionsville Fall Festival Parade.

On a beautiful autumn day, nearly 200 people gathered to celebrate Salem’s 175 years of faith and service. The morning worship service featured inspiring music, Holy Communion, and a message from Rev. David Owens, Executive Assistant to the Bishop, honoring Salem’s enduring spiritual impact on the community. Following a fellowship meal hosted by the United Methodist Women, the afternoon program brought Salem’s history to life through presentations, music, dramatic portrayals, and personal remembrances spanning the church’s founding in 1834 through the present day. Former pastors, longtime members, and descendants of founding families were recognized, highlighting the deep generational connections that have sustained Salem through eight generations of worship and ministry. The celebration reflected not only Salem’s rich history but also its commitment to carrying its mission of faith, friendship, and service into the future.
