Remember Sacrifice, Live with Gratitude
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, I found myself walking through the cemetery this week, watching flags being carefully placed beside the graves of veterans. There was something deeply moving about seeing that quiet act of remembrance unfold. Each flag represented a story, a sacrifice, a life given in service to others.
I had the chance to speak with one of the people helping lead the effort, and I was reminded how important it is that we pause to honor those who have served our country so faithfully. The freedoms we enjoy every day did not come without cost. Generations of men and women stepped forward with courage and sacrifice so that others could live in freedom and peace.
As Christians, moments like these also point us back to the greatest sacrifice of all — the love of Christ shown through the cross. Jesus gave everything so that we could experience eternal life, hope, and grace. Memorial Day reminds us not only to remember sacrifice in our nation’s history, but also to live with gratitude for the many blessings God has poured into our lives.
Perhaps this weekend will bring family gatherings, cookouts, races, or long-awaited time together. Those moments are gifts too. My prayer is that in the middle of all the activity, we make space for genuine connection. Sit a little longer at the table. Share stories. Pray together. Reach out to someone you love. Thank the veterans and military families in your life who have carried burdens many of us will never fully understand.
Maybe your own family has been shaped by military service — a parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse, or friend whose life was forever changed through their willingness to serve. Take time to thank God for them and for the legacy of sacrifice they represent.
Even with rainy days this week, I’ve been reminded that there is still so much goodness around us. God continues to bless us through community, through family, and through the opportunity to love one another well.
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I pray you find time not only to celebrate, but also to reflect with grateful hearts.
