A Gift That Preserves Salem's Story

Every church has a history, but what truly brings that history to life are the people whose stories become part of it.

Recently, Salem Methodist Church was honored to receive a special gift from Bill Monette—a framed painting of the Salem church building that has been in his family for decades. The artwork, signed by artist H. Niemeyer and dated 1967, originally belonged to Bill's grandfather, Ora Marsh, who now rests in Salem Cemetery.

But along with the painting came something even more meaningful: a reminder of the deep roots many families have at Salem.

Bill shared that his family's connection to the church reaches back to its earliest days. According to family history, one of his great-grandmothers was among Salem's founding generation. While the details have faded with time, the legacy of faith has continued through each generation.

One family story has been passed down for years.

Back in the days of horse and buggy, Bill's family had prepared to leave for church one Sunday morning. The horse and carriage were ready, but before they could leave, they had to return inside the house—perhaps to care for a sick child or tend to another unexpected need. Somehow, the horse decided not to wait.

When the congregation gathered at Salem, there sat the family's horse and buggy...without the family.

It's one of those stories that has become part of family lore, bringing smiles whenever it's retold. Whether every detail is remembered exactly as it happened or not, the story reflects something that has always been true about Salem: generation after generation has made gathering here an important part of life.

The newly donated painting now serves as more than a beautiful piece of artwork. It is a visual reminder of the people who came before us—the families who worshiped here, served their neighbors, raised their children in faith, and helped shape the church we know today.

We are deeply grateful to Bill Monette for entrusting this piece of his family's history to Salem. By sharing it, he has also shared a part of our collective story.

As we continue looking toward the future, may we never forget those whose faithfulness laid the foundation for where we are today. Their stories encourage us to continue building a legacy of faith for generations yet to come.
