Don’t Let Your Heart Grow Cold

The weather has certainly changed! It feels like we almost jumped straight from summer into winter without much of a fall. Hopefully, we’ll still get a little taste of those beautiful fall days in the weeks ahead.
This time of year always seems to move quickly. We fill our calendars with fall activities, and before we know it, November arrives with Thanksgiving. Then comes December and Christmas.
The next few months are going to move quickly at Salem, too, as we journey through the New Testament together. As we do, I hope we don’t move so quickly that we miss what God is trying to say to us.
Second Timothy 3:16–17 reminds us that all Scripture is God-breathed. The Bible isn’t simply a historical book or a collection of stories. As Christians, we believe that Scripture is true and that its words continue to speak into our lives today.
We believe that Jesus came for us, died for us and rose again for us. Through Him, we find forgiveness for our sins and the promise of new life.
As we move from the Old Testament into the New Testament, we’ll see how the story of Scripture comes together and points us toward Jesus. But along the way, there is something else we need to pay attention to: our hearts.
It can be easy to let our hearts grow cold.
Life gets busy. Our schedules fill up. Thanksgiving approaches. Christmas preparations begin. We can become so focused on everything happening around us that we stop taking the time to listen to what God is saying within us.
That’s why this journey through the New Testament is about more than simply learning what Scripture says. It’s an opportunity to let God’s Word guide our lives and prepare our hearts for what is ahead.
Before Christmas arrives, let’s make room for God.
Let’s spend time in His Word. Let’s listen for what He is teaching us. Let’s allow Scripture to shape the way we live, love and serve others.
And most importantly, let’s do it together.
We have an exciting journey ahead as we walk through the New Testament and eventually arrive at the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Let’s encourage one another along the way, keep our hearts open to God and not give up.
