Casting Our Nets Wider

There’s something about getting away from the noise of everyday life that gives us room to notice what God may be trying to tell us.

Recently, Pastor Krista had the opportunity to spend some time in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by water, nature and plenty of opportunities to fish. With fewer distractions and less time spent looking at a phone, there was more time to simply be present.

And somewhere between the lake, the fishing and the quiet, a familiar story from Scripture came to mind.

When Jesus called some of His first disciples, He met them right where they were—in their boats, working with their nets. Fishing was something they understood. It was how they provided for themselves and their families.

But Jesus invited them to see their purpose differently.

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” — Matthew 4:19

That invitation wasn’t simply about leaving behind one way of life. It was a call to look outward. To seek people who needed hope. To build relationships. To invite others into something they may not have experienced before.

That same calling belongs to us today.

Sometimes it can be easy for the church to focus inward. We gather with people we already know, participate in familiar routines and spend time with those who are already part of our community. Those relationships matter—but Jesus continually calls us beyond what is comfortable and familiar.

Who hasn’t been invited yet?

Who is searching for community, hope or purpose?

Who might be waiting for someone to simply make room for them?

Being a disciple isn’t only about strengthening our own faith. It also means helping create opportunities for someone else to discover theirs.

As we begin a new month and move into the final months of the year, perhaps this is an opportunity to cast our nets a little wider. Look beyond ourselves. Start a conversation. Extend an invitation. Notice someone new.

We may never know how God will use one simple connection.

Jesus is still calling people to follow Him—and He is still asking us to help make that invitation known.
