A Phone Call, a Prayer, and New Life

There are moments that change everything in an instant. For my family, one came with a phone call on April 21, 2011: my brother had suffered a heart attack.
In the middle of that fear, something remarkable happened. My teenage niece, trained as a lifeguard in Canada where they were living at the time, stepped in without hesitation. She performed CPR and brought her father back. What could have been the end became the beginning of something we can only describe as grace.
The days that followed were filled with uncertainty. He was rushed to the hospital and placed in an induced coma. My mom and I wrestled with what to do—should we drop everything and go, or wait and see what would happen? We didn’t know what the outcome would be, and the waiting felt heavy.
Then came Easter Sunday, just a few days later.
He woke up—fully himself, with no brain damage, even after being without oxygen longer than anyone would have hoped. In the days after, he was transferred to another hospital to receive a defibrillator, a safeguard for whatever might come next.
On a day that celebrates resurrection, we experienced it in a deeply personal way.
That moment has stayed with me as a reminder: even in what feels like the worst, God is still at work. Sometimes life brings us face-to-face with fear, uncertainty, and circumstances we would never choose. And yet, even there, something good can begin to take shape.
Not every story unfolds this way. But even in the waiting, there is space to reflect, to look for glimpses of grace, and to trust that God is not finished.
As you move into a new season, take time to reflect. Where has hope met you in unexpected places? Where might God be inviting you to see something differently?
Sometimes, the story isn’t over—it’s just beginning.
